SEO Copywriting: What everybody should know about putting their business on the web

The web is the next great frontier of business with opportunities you just can’t get anywhere else.

With 3 billion and counting sites out there, and competitors around every corner, how can you get online and get noticed?

Studies have shown that you have only 4 seconds to get a readers attention. If you haven’t got it by then, no matter how good your product is, your visitors will just go elsewhere.

On the web, you can’t afford to send mixed-messages: the words on the page — the copywriting — can make or break your site.

Nine great tips for your website copywriting

  • Write an attention-grabbing headline to focus your visitors attention and clearly and quickly convey your initial offer.
  • Answer the first question any visitor has “What’s in it for me?”. The best way to get your visitors attention is to get to the point quickly and simply. Use bullet points, use clear unambiguous language, and definitely research your audience. Long rambling copywriting is the exception rather than the rule on the web.
  • List clear features or benefits to reinforce why a visitor should buy your service or even contact you. Spell it out: Explain the advantage of your product or service and then say why it will help your visitors.
  • Don’t just talk about you. The copywriting shouldn’t just talk about your company, who you are and what you do. Your visitors have come to your site because they’re interested in something you offer and something to make their life easier.
  • Be friendly and don’t talk-down to your visitors. The world has changed and people are far more savvy, especially online. Not only that, brand loyalty, something which was a mainstay of businesses pre-web, simply doesn’t exist except in the rarest of cases (usually technology, for example: Apple computers). Every visitor is a potential client, so unless you’re BMW or Microsoft, with an established business, you simply can’t afford to alienate people.
  • Wherever possible, put useful and important information on the page rather than in a sales brochure that visitors have to download. Technical specifications, and the nitty-gritty details that people can pour-over need to be put somewhere on your site, even on a full description page accessible through a link. Don’t make the mistake of assuming your fridge-freezer will sell without these: people need to know whether it will fit through the door!
  • Don’t try to push all your services on one page. It’s best to have individual tailored pages for each of the things you do. And don’t forget to use links to help visitors get around!
  • Invest in time to research your Search Terms, by searching for websites and businesses that offer the same service as you do. By doing this, and including these terms in your site, you can start to pick-up on the search terms your customers and visitors will use to help find you. Remember that they won’t necessarily know your name!
  • Animations might look good, but they should never dominate the site. Search Engines like Google and Bing can’t properly read the text in these kind of sites and so you will have to work twice as hard to get onto page one than you need to. The rule here is Plain Text Is Best!
